The church provides a place of prayer and worship. We offer encouragement, hospitality, companionship, refreshment, nourishment and support for mind, body, and soul.
St Mary’s is home to a wide range of activities and groups. We welcome everyone who would like to find out more or become involved in any of our activities.
We try to keep the church open regularly throughout the year.
The parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, a Grade One starred listed building stands high near the centre of Banbury and close to the crossing of ancient main roads and within two hundred metres of the Banbury Cross. It has been a place of worship for centuries and the current building, built in a classical style, was raised at the end of the eighteenth century following irreparable damage suffered by the fine Gothic building during the Civil War.
In the latter part of the last century, the church having fallen into disrepair, a major refurbishment was undertaken. The Heritage Lottery fund, along with many other generous supporters allowed the building to be brought back to its former glory. The renovation included a remodelling of the chancel which allowed for the erection of a broad and deep stage suitable for both choir and performance events. New lighting and sound along with catering and accessible toilet facilities made for a building ready to welcome all kinds of events with it doors wide open to the community.
The ministers and clergy are happy to receive enquiries about any aspect of the worship, work and outreach of St Mary’s. For more historical information please visit the history page.
Major restoration work has recently been carried out with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, charities and local business. The church boasts many fine features: spectacular blue vaulting, gilded columns and more than twenty beautiful stained glass windows. The church is home to St Mary’s Gift Shop, which offers a range of gifts, books and cards and LiveArts @ St Mary’s, which organises a regular programme of concerts and events.
