Christenings (Baptisms)

Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”                             Matthew 28:18-19

And we at St Mary’s are very happy to follow Jesus’ commands. In fact, we love sharing such services with families.

St Mary’s is a shared church so you can choose to come to a Church of England Service or a United Reformed Church service. Both groups welcome all ages for baptism, babies, children, young people and adults.

Baptisms usually happen around 1.30 p.m. on Sunday afternoons. However, you can request to have a baptism during a church service, in the Church of England at 9.30 a.m. or in the United Reformed Church at 11.15 a.m.

During your baptism you are welcomed into God’s family, and will be given a candle to show that you have received the light of Christ and that a new life with Christ is beginning.

For a child who is too young to make promises for themselves it is usual to invite friends or relatives to become Godparents. You may choose a minimum of two and a maximum of five people to be Godparents to your child.

We will be pleased to welcome you to St Mary’s Church for your baptism. There will always be a place for you here. Your baptism joins you to Christ and to his whole church, in every part of the world, in the past and in the future, on earth and in heaven. Your baptism is a once in a lifetime event and we hope that it will be a joyous and memorable occasion.

Service of Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child

If you are uncertain as to whether a baptism is right for you then we can offer a lovely service of thanksgiving to God for the gift of your child. This allows them to consider as they grow older whether thoy wish to be baptised and make their own promises to God.

To enquire about booking a baptism or a service of thanksgiving,

please phone the church office on 01295 253329.
