Review of Jigsaw Festival 21st to 23rd September 2023
We have had a wonderful Jigsaw Festival over the past three days in St. Mary's Church, Banbury. Many thanks to all who organised the event and to those who came and bought a large number of jigsaws. The informal talk given by Sue Riches on Friday evening was well attended, and we learnt a great deal about 'The History and Benefits of Jigsaws'.
Sue spoke about the benefits of jigsaws which include de-stressing and mindfulness - you can switch off and immerse yourself in the puzzle. Jigsaws can be undertaken individually or as a sociable group activity. Puzzles promote spatial awareness, finger dexterity and can help improve general knowledge. The first jigsaws in the 18th and 19th centuries depicted maps, and were designed as a geographical and educational tool for children. They were originally made out of wood until the 1880s when cardboard was introduced as the backing to the picture. Nowadays you can even take up virtual jigsaws as an on-line hobby!
Sue told us about the jigsaw club ('Piece Together') which she organises at St Hugh's Church in Banbury every 4th Tuesday of the month from 2 - 3.30 pm. There is a large membership of all ages who meet there every month for conversation, camaraderie and to exchange jigsaws. During Covid they even delivered jigsaws around the town to people who were shielding at home. Sue finished her fascinating talk with a good news story about a member who lost 2 special rings in a jigsaw box which had been returned to the jigsaw library. Sue was able to find the right box and discover the 2 rings lying under all the jigsaw pieces, and then give back the rings to their rightful owner, much to everybody's delight!
The Jigsaw Festival has been a very enjoyable event which has encouraged the sharing of a wonderful hobby, as well as conversations and cake in St Mary's Church.
